  • The death of Mira Linder - Toronto’s anti-aging Beauty Queen

    88-year-old Mira Linder tragically passed away on Dec 30th at a ripe old age. Anyone from Toronto, that has ever frequented spas, facial shops and beauty parlors will be familiar with the name ‘ Mira Linder’ She was a pioneering entrepreneur of woman’s beauty treatments and the owner of Mira Linders Esthetics a spa which she opened in Toronto in 1973. What gives this spa its historical significance is the fact that it was the first ever day spa to open in Toronto City.Mira Linder was known as a flamboyantly elegant woman that was extremely strong willed; she was never afraid to speak her mind and did so whenever the occasion called.  Born in Poland in 1921, she is known to have lived through the holocaust, having even spent some of her youth in an internment camp based in Siberia. Mira could speak 6 different languages, with English being the last one learnt. Her friends and family all share a joke regarding a mistake that she made while asking for a drink, she asked, “I’d like a scotch on the BRICKS” Later on in her life Mira moved to Uzbekistan to marry her husband David Linder, who was also closely involved in the beauty industries. Their marriage was a long and happy one lasting 34 years till one fateful day, while the couple was living in Detroit, David passed away. It is known that Mira re married one more time before her death. Mira had one daughter during this marriage, Kate Alexander, they worked briefly  together a few years before Miras untimely death.Mira was always involved with beauty in some way or other, probably picking most of her knowledge from her mother who was an admired and famous cosmetologist back in Poland.Mira owned 3 branches of her spa, one in Detroit, Palm Beach and Toronto. In 1981 she decided to rename her shop ‘Mira Linder spa in the city’ a name that became synonymous for its wide range of particularly effective facials and manicures. One anti aging treatment that Mira offered made use of animal embryos; this method is considered to be very advanced for its time and nothing like it had ever been seen in any other spa.  Another supplement she was advocating was Reneuve anti-aging enzyme.Unfortunately after enjoying a long happy history the spa was forced to close its door to the public and in 2003 it had officially stopped business.
